Saturday Morning at the Organic Market in San Jose, Costa Rica

It’s always a treat to go to the organic market in San Jose, Costa Rica on Saturday mornings.  It is a great mix of sights and sounds and smells which always makes for a pleasant way to spend the morning.  I always enjoy the walk along the railroad tracks  and usually meet friendly locals going about their business and kids playing along the way.  Nothing terribly remarkable, just a relaxing weekend ritual. Hope you enjoy!

Costa Rica Hotels – Hotel Catalina in Playa Jaco

We are working on two different series of articles about Costa Rica hotels and businesses in Playa Jaco so we thought today we would let them overlap and write about Hotel Catalina.  Hotel Catalina is located on the south end of the beach in Playa Jaco.  The hotel is located directly on the beach and is surrounded by beautiful green mountains.  It is a boutique, family owned hotel that brings the charm of old Jaco to their guests.  With the sound of the waves just steps away, you will enjoy a pleasant, relaxing stay on your Costa Rica vacation.  And the charming mother and daughter staff are happy to arrange any tours or excursions that might interest you.  They are more than happy to talk about the area and help you with any information that might be of interest to you.

There are a lot of Costa Rica hotels to choose from and we will offer just a few reasons why you will enjoy your vacation at Hotel Catalina in Playa Jaco.  With the holidays just around the corner and high season coming you will want to make plans soon to enjoy the beauty that is Costa Rica.

One of the first reasons we recommend Hotel Catalina is that they offer the best of what Jaco has to offer.  They are located on the south end of Playa Jaco, which has a much nicer beach and is quieter than central Jaco.  But you are not isolated.  They are only a short walk or inexpensive taxi ride to downtown Jaco.  So you won’t miss out on all the great restaurants, bars, souvenir shops and more.  There are surf lessons available right out front of the hotel.  You will enjoy the feel of this part of Jaco as many who live there prefer this area for afternoon BBQ’s, cocktails at sunset and walking their dogs in the evenings.  You will definitely get to know people in the neighborhood while you are here.

Another reason to stay at Hotel Catalina in Jaco is that the rooms are very quaint, comfortable and the surroundings are peaceful.  The lush plants on the property remind you that you are in a truly amazing country.  There is a small pool facing the beach that is perfect for relaxing with a drink and watching one of the patented South Jaco Beach sunsets.  Check out these PHOTOS to get a little preview of what you will experience.

The last reason I will mention for staying here are the charming hostesses that I mentioned before.  The property has been family owned and operated for years and these lovely ladies go the extra mile to make your Costa Rica vacation something to remember.  From restaurant recommendations to tours to general information on the area, they are there to assist you while planning your days.

Next time you are looking for Costa Rica hotels, be sure and consider Hotel Catalina in Playa Jaco.  Whether you want to surf, do extreme adventures or just sit on the beach, this is the place to visit.  You are also welcome to do one of our Surf Packages with Hotel Catalina for your accommodations.

This is the first in a series of articles about various businesses in the Jaco, Costa Rica area. We will focus on businesses that are of interest to tourists and locals alike. The three owners of Camelo are from Venezuela and share a passion for bodyboarding and creating amazing swimwear for women who surf and those that just want to look good at the beach.  Camelo has one location in Jaco and another in Puerto Viejo, along with their clothing in a couple of locations in San Jose.  They are constantly growing and also offer their clothing in Panama and Puerto Rico.   They are very active in bodyboarding and have several team riders that are sponsored by Camelo.  One strong feature of all their bikinis and swimsuits are that they are designed for surfers and stay in place in the water for women who live an active lifestyle.

Costa Rica Vacation for Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is a great time of year for a Costa Rica Vacation.  And a surf vacation or surf camp in Costa Rica is the perfect way to spend the holiday.  It is before high season, so the prices are still at green season rates.  The weather has generally started the transition into dry season.  Where we host our surf packages, at Hotel Poseidon, there is a great sports lounge upstairs for all the weekend football action.  And the hotel does a full Thanksgiving dinner featuring smoked turkey.  We have our surf camp package available, which you can see at SURF CAMP!  Although this is called a “Surf Camp Package” you have plenty of time on your own.  It is not a kiddie camp where the whole day is planned out for you.  Surfing and yoga are the main focus and the rest of the day we can arrange any other activities you might be interested in.  We also have packages for families or groups where only part of the group is surfing.  And we have packages available for those with no interest in surfing.   Contact us today and arrange one of our packages or let us customize one for you based on your needs.

A couple of places to watch American football while Surfing in Costa Rica

It’s that time of year when surfing in Costa Rica is very good and all of our friends are excited about the beginning of football season.   Two favorites in Jaco are the Sky Lounge in Hotel Poseidon and Los Amigos.  The Sky Lounge is a smaller and more intimate venue, which is air-conditioned, has one big screen and 3 other TV’s located in the room.  The best way to describe it is a living room atmosphere.  The owner is good about trying to find any NCAA games you might be looking for and most NFL games are shown on Sunday.  Ask your bartender for various promotions that are offered throughout the season and get in on the football pool if you will be there through Monday night football.  Hotel Poseidon is located on Bohio Street, which is the main street heading toward the beach.

Los Amigos is located in the center of downtown Jaco, Costa Rica.  Los Amigo’s proudly offers a non smoking air-conditioned dining and drinking experience as well as open air outdoor seating.  . Serving lunch and dinner from 12pm – 11pm Sun thru Thurs and 12pm – 1am Fri & Sat.   There are 7 – 42” plasma TV’s, 3 projectors, 6 satellite feeds hosting every sporting event you could want to see.  They have a great selection on their Menu with something for every appetite.

Third World Surf

As I have been working on our Costa Rica surf report page for the last few days, I thought I would write a little about how we are going to format our page and give you some good links to check out surfing in Costa Rica.  The country offers many different areas for surfing and you should be able to check out and compare before planning a surf camp or surf vacation in Costa Rica. Our source of surfing information coming out of Playa Hermosa on the central Pacific coast is located at the Surf Inn Hermosa.  They have a live cam going all the time.  Just click on the photo below to see what is happening now.

Surf Camps in Costa Rica

Surf in Costa Rica

Third World SurfThe information can be overwhelming when researching Surf Camps in Costa Rica.  There are many great companies out there and so many beautiful destinations to choose from.  In addition to destination, some other things to factor in your decision are the level of accommodations, quality of the instruction and how inclusive you want your vacation to be.  Also, what is the format of the camp and how many other guests will be there likely be while you are there?

One great thing about Playa Jaco, Costa Rica and the surrounding area is that there is almost always somewhere you can catch waves year round.  It is also a good choice because beginners can surf in Jaco, while the more advanced and adventurous can tangle with the often heavy surf of Playa Hermosa, just to the south of Jaco.  Our particular surf camp package is hosted at Hotel Poseidon.  It is a boutique hotel with a small pool, two bars and an incredible restaurant.  The rooms are nice and comfortable, offering AC, cable tv, wifi and a mini bar.  The groups are kept small and sometimes it will be private for you and your group.  Even with small groups we make sure you have a good time by including you in local events, bbq’s and introducing you to friends in the area.  We have done quite a bit of honeymoons, bachelor parties, girls trips as well as family vacations.  In addition to surfing, our premium package offers yoga, massage, transportation and more.  As we are heading into green season, we have special prices for the next several months.  And if you don’t see what you are looking for, just ask us and we will do our best to create a personal package just for you.
